I saw a copy of the original bond for the marriage of Benjamin Grayson and Nancy Regney on May 29, 1815, in Knox Co., Tennessee. The bondsman was Henry Regney, and the witness was A. Hutchinson, D.C. The government records for the war of 1812 contain a file number BLWT 7392-160 50, which lists Benjamin Grayson in the East Tennessee Volunteers, First Regiment under the command of Wear, in the Company of Captain John Chiles. He served from September 23, 1813, to January 1, 1814, as Sergeant, and from September 20, 1814, to May 3, 1815, as Second Lieutenant. On the company muster roll for the latter service, he listed his residence as Knoxville. On December 2, 1850, in Lawrence Co., Indiana, he requested bounty land, saying that he will be 58 years old on January 16, 1851, from which we deduce his birth date.
Notice that two of his children were born in Arkansas, in 1823 and 1827. We know that Tennessee awarded bounty land to veterans of the War of 1812. He may have taken advantage of this in 1822, and sold out in 1829 or 1830 to move to Indiana.
The only reason for assuming that John and Alfred were children of Benjamin was that they were listed on the census in the same county in 1850. The other children were found in the same household in the 1850 census.
The 1830 Census for Lawrence Co., Indiana, on page 160, lists a Benjamin Grayson.
The 1850 Census for Shawswick Township, Lawrence Co., Indiana, page 808, entry number 1107, lists a household containing: Benjamin Grayson, age 58, born in North Carolina, farmer, land worth $700; Nancy, age 54, born in Tennessee; Sarah, age 23, born in Arkansas; Julia, age 19, born in Indiana; Catherine, age 17, born in Indiana; Thomas, age 15, born in Indiana; and Emily, age 13, born in Indiana.
The 1850 census for Perry Township, Lawrence Co., Indiana, list a househould containing Alfred Grayson, age 27, born in Arkansas, farmer, land worth $1400; and Rosina, age 26, born in Kentucky.
