Thomas Winstanley

Birthdate, place, and mother is from a likely birth certificate.

Another possible birth certificate: Sept 3, 1847,
father George Winstanley, labourer, mother Ann Jane Winstanley,
nee Stighton (?). Born Strawberry Place, Hyg???, Everton, Lancaster.

Marriage certificate for daughter Charlotte shows
his occupation is "engine driver".

1891 Wigan census lists him as a Railway Engine Driver,
age 44, born in Whelley, England.  Whelley must be the street.

1851 census (Wigan, Parish of St. George, 95 Whelley St.) shows a Thomas Winstanley, 2 yrs old, living next door to the
Laurensons, birthplace Wigan.  But this Thomas has parents
named Robert and Ann.


Sarah Cadman or Chatman

1891 Census.

1867 Marriage record in Wigan may show her name.

There is a birth record dated Feb. 21, 1848, Aspull,
Lancaster for Sarah Chatman.  Father is James Chatman,
occupation "Page, man" (?).  Mother is Lydia Chatman,
nee Gillam.

John Grayson

Born February 12, 1820, in Kingston, Roane Co., Tennessee.  Died July 4, 1891, in Maumee, Jackson Co., Indiana, at his father's house.

The 1850 Census for Pleasant Run Township, Lawrence Co., Indiana, on page 892, entry 1493, lists a household containing: John Grayson, age 28, born in Tennessee, farmer, land worth $600; Betty A., age 24, born in Tennessee; Mary I., age 6, born in Indiana; Nancy C., age 1, born in Indiana.

The Union Army National Archives of the Civil War contains a record numbered WC-384-474 and a pension certificate number 152-435, which contains the following information.  He was born about 1820 in Kingston, Roane Co., Tennessee.  He died July 4, 1891 in Jackson Co., Indiana, at his father's house, in Maumee or perhaps Mooney.  His wife was Betsy Ann Peters, born about 1826.  John Grayson was 5 feet 10 inches tall, dark complexion, black hair, black eyes.  He enlisted August 15, 1862, at Clear Spring, Jackson Co., Indian, at the age of 42, for three years, as a Private in Company K of the 67th regiment of the Indiana Volunteers commanded by Captain Applewhite.

Janet Armstrong, in a letter dated September 11, 1992, tells us that John's birthdate is February 12, 1820, according to his tombstone in Mitchell Cemetery, Monroe Co., Indiana, and that Betsy died February 7, 1900, at the age of 75, according to her tombstone in the same cemetery.

Elizabeth Ann Peters

Betsy's first claim for widows pension was in 1891 was rejected on the grounds that "apoplexy which caused he soldier's death was in no way due to his military service." She made a second application in 1893. He request must have been granted because Wiliam C. Fleetwood of Maumee gave notice to the U.S. Pension Agency that she be dropped from the penison rools due to her death.
